"We're not just Horsing around!"
Fishing Registration Dec 2009.doc
Please see the two latest attachments above. The lake will be stocked for the first time this winter with 700 Rainbow Trout, instead of Catfish. This is a good thing because normally they are easier to catch than catfish and much more colorful. Also, they are very tasty to eat. See best bait to use and how to rig your lines for Rainbow Trout below and on the bottom of the 1st attachment.
Recommended Fishing Baits
Berkley Power Dough Bait (Rainbow), (Red Corn and Marshmallow Bait provided)
We recommend fishing on the bottom with a #14 treble hook, 18" of 4 lb. test mono leader, #12 black swivel, and a 1/2 ounce slip weight tied onto reel line.
Academy or Bass Pro Shop carries these items. Good luck!!!
The next Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Basic and Advanced Fishing Class which is open to the public will be on Saturday, December 5, 2009, rain or shine. The basic fishing class from 8-11am is for 6 years and up and the advanced fishing class from 12noon-3pm is for 9 years and up. These classes may seem long, but the last part of the time will be spent actually fishing to practice what you have learned with some help. To participate in the fishing tournament from 3-6pm, you must take one or both of the classes.Parents must be present with their kids, ages 12 and under. We could use some help from the parents to help their own kids fish like rigging and baiting their lines, casting, and untangling their lines. We would prefer you bring your own rods and reels with tackle to get use to them, if you have them. See 2nd attachment on how to rig your lines ahead of time. No need to go out and buy one for this event. TPWD will have plenty to lend out, if necessary. No fishing license is required for anyone due to a TPWD exemption has been granted for this event. There will be a small admin. fee of $5 per person for each class.
A hot lunch for $5 will be provided at 11am -12noon as a fund raiser for the Boy Scouts of America-Troop 557. This will include a hot charcoal broiled cheese burger with tasty chips and a cold drink. The fishing tournament will be awarding some nice prizes, like rod & reel combos, for the longest fish caught by three age categories. There will be a large fish aquarium to display recently caught live fish by the participants, a fishing tackle station to loan out rod and reels and help rig up your lines with tackle and free bait, a casting contest for prizes, and live snakes with turtles exhibit presented by Art Leuterman - BSA Scout Leader. TPWD will have their "Take Me Fishing" fully equipped trailer and a large Wildlife Display Educational Trailer in the parking lot for your viewing pleasure.
Certified TPWD angler instructors will be teaching both classes and the fishing tournament will be led by BSA Life Scout, Nick Christoffersen of Troop 557 for his Eagle Scout Service Project at the Mary Jo Peckham Park Lake and Pavilion at 5597 Gardenia Lane in Katy, TX 77493. This is at Franz Rd. and Ave. D, just west of the large aerial Katy Water Tower. Please mail the completed registration form attached to the West Houston Scouter Fishing Club, P.O. Box 446, Barker, TX 77413 by Friday, November 27, 2009. Attach a check or money order payable to Tim Gebauer-WHSFC. There will be no refunds if cancelled, but you can arrange for a replacement with a newly completed reservation form and they can pay you back. A waiting list will be provided upon request. Please register as early as possible because each class is limited to 60 participants. First come, first serve. See below for further details on both classes. Email Nick at Nick_C@consolidated.net or me at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
